About The Position

This position will be responsible for maintaining our state roadway systems. Requirements

KNOWLEDGE OF TYPICAL CONSTRUCTION MEASURING TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, OR INSTRUMENTS AND STANDARD SAFETY TECHNIQUES.
OPERATING A VARIETY OF HAND AND POWER TOOLS;
OPERATE AND PERFORM PRE-TRIP INSPECTION/MINOR MAINTENENANCE ON VEHICLES AND/OR MECHANIZED EQUIPMENT THAT THEY ARE OPERATING;
READ AND UNDERSTAND JOB RELATED MATERIALS AND FILL OUT REPORTS AND FORMS;
MAINTAIN AND REPAIR HIGHWAYS, BRIDGES AND/OR OTHER HIGHWAY STRUCTURES;
COMMUNICATE BOTH VERBALLY AND IN WRITING, INCLUDING FOLLOWING ORAL/WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS;
DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS;
LIFT, CARRY, AND HANDLE UP TO 50 POUNDS;
STOOP, CLIMB, SQUAT, PUSH, PULL, CRAWL OR BEND ON A FREQUENT BASIS;
WORK OUTDOORS IN VARIOUS WEATHER CONDITIONS, ON VARIOUS TERRAINS AND AT VARIOUS HEIGHTS OR IN HIGH VOLUME TRAFFIC;
STAND FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME.
ABILITY TO OPERATE MOTOR VEHICLES AND OTHER MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT.
A valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Instructional Permit is required at the time of hire.
Obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
This position requires a valid Class (B) driver’s license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
Applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.

Nice To Haves

Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
The incumbent must successfully obtain and maintain, training, certification, a satisfactorily criminal background check and any additional requirements provided by the Department of Corrections in order to supervise inmates.

Responsibilities

Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
Operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck.
Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating.
Cleans and washed equipment.
Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
