Requirements

  • Knowledge of typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques.
  • Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Skilled in operating and performing pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.
  • Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges, and/or other highway structures.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, crawl, or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Must respond to emergencies.
  • Must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) while on duty status, consistent with the type of commercial driver’s license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety sensitive functions.
  • Required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • Possess a valid Class “E” driver’s license.
  • Obtain a Class “B” CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position.
  • Obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
  • Required to respond before, during, and following emergency situations.
  • A Class “E” Driver’s License is required at time of hire.
  • A CDL Class “B” License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position.
  • Obtain a CDL Class “B” License with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • Applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
  • Mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.
  • Must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.
  • Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position.
  • Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query.
  • Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, will not be eligible for hire or promotion in the Career Service, or appointment in the Selected Exempt Service (SES) or Senior Management Service (SMS), unless they are registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS.

Nice To Haves

  • The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding.
  • An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements.
  • The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee.
  • If the employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license.
  • Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
  • Assists in maintaining a chemical herbicide program along highway rights-of way.
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
