About The Position

This position is with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Four - Broward Operations. The Highway Maintenance Technician II will operate various vehicles and heavy equipment for bridge and roadway maintenance, perform minor equipment maintenance, and assist with repairs and cleaning. The role involves leading and coordinating the work of a maintenance crew, including planning tasks, selecting materials, maintaining records, and preparing reports. Additionally, the position requires performing manual labor, temporary traffic control, basic carpentry, masonry, painting, and assisting with highway sign installation. The technician will also train crew members in equipment operation and traffic control procedures.

Requirements

  • Possess a valid Class "E" driver’s license.
  • Obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position.
  • Obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
  • Must be United States (U.S.) citizens or lawfully authorized alien workers.
  • Must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Must be able to stand for an extended period of time.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Must be able to operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Must be able to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Must be able to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Must be able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Must respond to emergencies.
  • Must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) or perform other CMV safety-sensitive functions while on-duty status.
  • Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license.
  • Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Leads and coordinates the work of a maintenance crew, including planning tasks, selecting materials, maintaining records, and preparing reports.
  • Trains crew members in equipment operation and traffic control procedures.
