About The Position

This position will be responsible for maintaining our state roadway system. Requirements

  • TYPICAL CONSTRUCTION MEASURING TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, OR INSTRUMENTS AND STANDARD SAFETY TECHNIQUES.
  • OPERATING A VARIETY OF HAND AND POWER TOOLS.
  • READ AND UNDERSTAND JOB-RELATED MATERIALS AND FILL OUT REPORTS AND FORMS.
  • MAINTAIN AND REPAIR HIGHWAYS, BRIDGES AND/OR OTHER HIGHWAY STRUCTURES.
  • COMMUNICATE BOTH VERBALLY AND IN WRITING, INCLUDING FOLLOWING ORAL/WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS.
  • DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS.
  • LIFT, CARRY, AND HANDLE UP TO 50 POUNDS.
  • STOOP, CLIMB, SQUAT, PUSH, PULL, CRAWL OR BEND ON A FREQUENT BASIS.
  • WORK OUTDOORS IN VARIOUS WEATHER CONDITIONS, ON VARIOUS TERRAINS AND AT VARIOUS HEIGHTS OR IN HIGH VOLUME TRAFFIC.
  • STAND FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME.
  • PERFORM MINOR MAINTENANCE AND/OR REPAIR JOBS.
  • OPERATE MOTOR VEHICLES AND OTHER MECHANIZED EQUIPMENT.
  • A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire.
  • A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
  • Must be United States (U.S.) citizens, or lawfully authorized alien workers.
  • Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position.
  • Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query.
  • Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.

Nice To Haves

  • Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with operating a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck once a Class B License Instructional Permit is obtained.
  • Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Uses small hand, power and pneumatic tools. Examples include shovels, hammers, drills, hand-held string and blade trimmers, push mowers, saws, jackhammers, etc.
  • Repairs and/or replaces guardrails, attenuators and/or fences.
  • Assists in the repair of asphalt/concrete surfaces.
  • Cuts, trims and removes trees, shrubs and vegetation.
  • Assists in shoulder restoration including mulching, seeding, fertilizing, etc.
  • Removes litter and debris.
  • Performs large and small machine mowing.
  • Assists in repair, replacement and/or cleaning of drainage structures.
  • Assists in installation and/or removal of signs.
  • Inspects and performs light maintenance on tools, equipment and vehicles.
  • Flags traffic and/or places or removes traffic control devices.
