About The Position

This position is responsible for the activities of a crew of Mobile Equipment Operators in maintaining/repairing roads in West Baton Rouge Parish, with the primary responsibility for vegetation control on highway right-of-way. The role requires self-motivation, the ability to perform duties with minimal supervision, and interpret unforeseen conditions. The incumbent must possess the knowledge, experience, and capability to train employees and skillfully operate and maintain light or heavy equipment owned by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. Participation in DOTD structured training programs and continuing education classes is expected. Employees must comply with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

Four years of experience in the construction, maintenance, or repair of roads, bridges, levees, drainage facilities, wharfs, buildings, or grounds; OR Four years of experience in the operation or maintenance of industrial or heavy mobile equipment.
A valid Class A, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required upon appointment.
The incumbent is required to maintain possession of a valid Louisiana Class A CDL while appointed to this position.

Responsibilities

Supervises, trains, and assists a maintenance crew in routine maintenance functions such as pothole patching, pavement repair, cleaning/repairing drain structures, mowing, shoulder repairs, litter cleanup, and tree removal.
Supervises all assigned equipment, ensuring proper servicing and upkeep to minimize downtime, ensure reasonable service life, and provide for safe operations.
Supervises a maintenance crew in supplying them with proper safety equipment and ensuring work sites are properly signed.
Prepares Daily Work reports, incident or accident reports, and may assist in preparing payrolls.
Conducts Performance Evaluation System sessions on subordinates.
Counsels and rates employees within the unit.
