About The Position

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Highway Construction Supervisor I. The successful candidate will serve as a working supervisor and will be responsible for the field operations of specialized union construction crews involved in the maintenance, construction, and reconstruction of highways and their related facilities which requires extensive overnight travel on a statewide basis.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
  • Requires two years of highway construction work.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
  • Requires successful completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Requires successful completion of pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing in compliance with USDOT standards which prohibit the use of cannabis.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers two (2) years of experience using construction materials and equipment.
  • Prefers one (1) year of experience planning, laying out and supervising work of a construction crew.
  • Prefers two (2) years of experience estimating material requirements for work.
  • Prefers one (1) year of experience reading and interpreting blueprints, equipment repair books and factory specifications.
  • Prefers one (1) year of experience in overhauling specialized construction equipment and tools.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as working supervisor for an assigned construction crew.
  • Instructs craftspeople concerning working capabilities and safe operations of heavy and highway construction equipment.
  • Calculates and measures final quantities of pay items to compute final costs of projects.
  • Completes daily reports for timekeeping, work progress, commodity items, labor, and material distribution, and equipment usage. This information is to be entered into the Department’s asset management program as needed.
  • Verifies project completion with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
  • Hires prevailing wage craftspeople through appropriate union officials in strict accordance with departmental policies.
  • Completes preventative maintenance during winter overhaul.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.
