About The Position

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Highway Construction Supervisor I. The successful candidate will serve as a working supervisor and is responsible for the operation of a highly specialized union steel fabrication and construction crew to make complex repairs to highway structures and related facilities which requires extensive travel on a statewide basis.

Requirements

Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
Requires two (2) years of experience on highway construction work.
Requires successful completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
Requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
Requires successful completion of pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing in compliance with USDOT standards which prohibit the use of cannibas.

Nice To Haves

Prefers two (2) years of experience using construction materials and equipment.
Prefers one (1) year of experience planning, laying out and supervising work of a construction crew.
Prefers two (2) years of experience estimating material requirements for work.
Prefers one (1) year of experience reading and interpreting blueprints, equipment repair books and factory specifications.
Prefers one (1) year of experience in overhauling specialized construction equipment and tools.

Responsibilities

Serves as working supervisor for an assigned construction crew.
Interprets detailed blueprints and steel fabrication plans to construct steel structural members, false work and special jacking and cribbing members necessary to make repairs in accordance with assigned projects.
Prepares daily reports for timekeeping, work progress, commodity items, labor and material distribution sheets, and equipment usage. This information is to be entered into the Department’s asset management program as needed.
Analyzes and determines traffic control patterns for unusual or special work procedures.
Verifies project compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Hires prevailing wage craftspeople through appropriate union officials in strict accordance with departmental policies.
Completes preventative maintenance during winter overhaul.
Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.
