About The Position

An opportunity exists for a High Voltage Equipment Technician in the Field Operations team based at the Calgary Janet Service Centre (JSC) location. Under the direction of the Manager, Substations South, and the support of the High Voltage Equipment On Site Work Leader, this position will be part of a team responsible for failure analysis assessments, identifying parts requirements, and refurbishment and testing of substation equipment including Transformers, Circuit Breakers, Regulators, Instrument Transformers, etc. as well as the dismantling and disposal of failed or obsolete equipment and materials.

Requirements

  • Journeyperson Power System Electrician (PSE) or Apprentice, Journeyperson Electric Motor Systems Technician (EMST), or Journeyperson Electrician.
  • Previous experience in the repair of major electrical equipment is an asset.
  • Demonstrated mechanical and electrical aptitude and interest.
  • Proven ability/experience in above noted responsibilities.
  • Proven track record of safe work and commitment to environmental, health and safety standards and requirements.
  • Ability to become competent in the development and documentation of Safe Work Plans.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work within strict deadlines.
  • Be competent and comfortable working with computers and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to adapt to changing conditions and able to effectively manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to effectively work as part of a team and independently.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive outcomes.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Willing to work in a shop environment.
  • Able to work comfortably at heights and adverse weather conditions if required.
  • This is a physically demanding position. To ensure we meet our safety requirements, you are required to be in good physical condition, have good manual dexterity and physical coordination and meet all physical fitness, medical and weight requirements.
  • Proven track record of good attendance and performance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating cranes, rigging and forklift equipment is an asset.
  • Limited field work, including travel, may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair major Electrical Equipment (Power Transformers, Regulators, Circuit Breakers, Instrument Transformers, etc.).
  • Receiving, unloading and loading electrical equipment and parts.
  • Identification of repair parts, and refurbishment of major electrical equipment.
  • Assisting with root cause failure analysis of failed electrical equipment.
  • Processing of insulating oil for inventory or for equipment.
  • Disposal, separating, and recycling of obsolete or failed equipment.
  • Safe handling, tracking, and disposal of electrical insulating materials including oil, compressed gas, and solid materials.
  • Provide technical support for the field technologists on electrical equipment (e.g., Breakers, Transformers, etc.).
  • Maintenance, testing and quality control of Gas Detector Relays.
  • Assist and support Field Operations and other disciplines as required.
