About The Position

The High School Security Officer is responsible for preserving the peace and providing a safe environment for staff, students, and visitors, as well as protecting district property and grounds. This role involves assisting building administrators and staff in enforcing school policies, conducting patrols, and managing access to school facilities. The officer must be able to respond effectively to various situations, including confrontations and emergencies, while limiting the use of force to the minimum extent necessary.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Successful experience in security or law enforcement preferred.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and City ordinances as they apply to the School District.
  • Knowledge of policies and administrative directives that affect the operation of the Security Department.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies for security operations.
  • Ability to follow and relay verbal and written orders.
  • Strong written and oral communications and relational skills.
  • Ability to remain professional, composed, and objective in all situations.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safe working conditions.
  • Ability to observe situations analytically, impartially, and objectively.
  • Ability to use sound logic and independent judgment to react quickly and appropriately in dangerous and emergency situations.
  • Ability to anticipate potential problems.
  • Ability to react to situations utilizing appropriate levels of force.
  • Ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, teachers, parents, and the public.
  • Ability to effectively welcome and embrace differences among employees and citizens.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist building administrators and staff in enforcing school policies, rules, and regulations to ensure safety.
  • Conduct foot patrols, monitoring both the inside and outside of assigned schools.
  • Refer students found in violation of school policies, rules, and regulations to building administration.
  • Assist building administrators and staff in preventing or restraining confrontations and altercations.
  • Direct individuals to vacate school property when necessary and refer them to the police department when appropriate.
  • Limit the use of force to the minimum extent necessary for self-protection and the safety of others.
  • Assist building administrators and staff in limiting access to school facilities.
  • Assist building administrators and staff in providing for the maintenance of the physical property of the school, staff, and students.
  • Attend all in-service training as required by Security Department Management.
  • Maintain and clean department-issued equipment and assigned vehicles.
  • Perform duties in all weather conditions and on any shift, day or night.
  • Perform related work as required.
