About The Position

The Dalton School, a progressive K-12 gender-inclusive school in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, is consistently recognized as one of the preeminent independent day schools in the nation. Known for its child-centered approach and an exceptional, inspiring faculty, Dalton enrolls over 1,300 students with approximately 350 faculty and staff. Guided by the Dalton Plan, the foundation of a Dalton education, our faculty meets each student’s evolving needs, interests, and abilities. Dalton challenges each student to develop intellectual independence, creativity, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility toward others both within the School and in the broader community. Dalton seeks a full-time High School Psychologist (Psy.D., Ph.D.) or Master Level Clinician, LCSW, LPC or Ed.D. for a leave replacement from November 2026 through June 2027. The psychologist/counselor will provide clinical counseling and consultation to support the mental health, emotional well-being, and healthy development of high school students. This is a full-time, in-person position reporting to the Director of Health & Wellness.

Requirements

  • Must have a doctoral degree in a mental health field and current clinical licensure.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience providing counseling or psychotherapy to adolescents; experience with high school-aged students required.
  • Strong understanding of adolescent development and contemporary mental health concerns.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Sound clinical judgment, strong professional boundaries, and ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to supporting students within an inclusive school community.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without needing sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with clinical assessment, risk assessment, crisis intervention, and/or care coordination preferred.
  • Experience working in a school, particularly an independent school setting, strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide short-term individual counseling to high school students presenting with a range of social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health concerns.
  • Conduct clinical and risk assessments; respond to mental health crises and develop safety plans when clinically indicated.
  • Develop and implement appropriate short-term interventions and coping strategies.
  • Support students navigating anxiety, depression, stress, relationships, identity development, family concerns, substance use, grief and loss, and other adolescent mental health concerns.
  • Determine when additional evaluation, outside treatment, or higher levels of care are warranted and facilitate appropriate referrals.
  • Maintain appropriate clinical boundaries, confidentiality, and documentation in accordance with professional standards and school policies.
  • Collaborate closely with students, parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, learning support professionals, and the High School Clinical Team to coordinate student support.
  • Communicate with outside therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other providers, as appropriate and with appropriate releases of information.
  • Coordinate school-based and community-based mental health services and support continuity of care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case consultation and contribute clinical expertise to discussions regarding students of concern.
  • Review neuropsychological, psychoeducational, psychological, and other relevant clinical evaluations and communicate clinically relevant findings and recommendations to appropriate school professionals.
  • Collaborate with the Learning Support Team to understand and implement recommendations related to students’ emotional, behavioral, and academic functioning.
  • Participate in High School guidance and student support meetings, contributing relevant clinical information and identifying students who may benefit from additional intervention or referral.
  • Provide clinical consultation to parents/guardians regarding adolescent mental health, emotional development, family dynamics, and school-related concerns.
  • Help families understand and respond to emerging mental health or behavioral concerns.
  • Provide referrals and resources to outside clinicians, treatment programs, and other community-based services when appropriate.
  • Facilitate communication among students, families, school professionals, and outside providers when clinically appropriate.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and clinically appropriate documentation of counseling sessions, consultations, referrals, and relevant student concerns in the school’s confidential August Schools database.
  • Maintain student confidentiality while appropriately communicating information necessary to ensure student safety and coordinate care.
