About The Position

The High School Assistant Band Director plays a crucial role in supporting the High School Band Director and enhancing the performance and musicianship of high school students. This position is ideal for a dedicated individual who is passionate about fostering a love of music and guiding students in their musical development. This is a 215-day contract position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Education.
  • Valid teaching certification in music education.
  • Strong knowledge of music pedagogy, instrumental techniques, and various musical genres.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • A passion for mentoring young musicians and creating an inclusive learning environment.
  • Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 25 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.
  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether like or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
  • Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor and giving information and instructions to students.

  • Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
  • The worker may be subject to tension as a regular, consistent part of the job.

  • Has knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the assigned school and Spartanburg School District Seven as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Assistant Band Director/Teacher.
  • Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Can take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.
  • Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of the age group assigned.
  • Knowledge of proper English usage, vocabulary, punctuation and spelling; has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use modern office practices and equipment, including computers.
  • Skill in applying a responsible attention to detail as necessary in preparing records, reports and correspondence.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the High School Band Director in planning, organizing, and conducting rehearsals and performances for the high school marching band.
  • Lead sectionals, providing focused instruction to improve students’ musical skills and performance abilities.
  • Coordinate logistics for marching band competitions, parades, and community performances.
  • Facilitate rehearsals, ensuring effective use of time and promoting a positive and productive rehearsal environment.
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that cater to diverse learning styles and skill levels within the band.
  • Foster individual and ensemble growth through constructive feedback and mentorship.
  • Serve as a liaison between students, parents, and faculty, effectively communicating about program events, expectations, and student progress.
  • Collaborate with other music educators and staff to promote a cohesive music education experience across all levels.
  • Assist in organizing band-related events such as concerts, festivals, and workshops that enrich the students' learning experience.
  • Participate in fundraising initiatives to support the band program and acquire necessary resources and materials.
  • Stay informed about current trends in music education and engage in professional development opportunities to enhance instructional practices.
  • Mentor student leaders within the band program, encouraging initiative and fostering ownership of their musical journey.
