About The Position

This internship is designed for current high school students to gain experience in engineering design and drafting. The intern will be responsible for performing routine designs of less complex engineering assignments under direct supervision, utilizing theoretical knowledge and practical design methods. The role involves assisting engineers and designers in various project tasks, including developing conceptual layouts, producing preliminary designs and material take-offs, and creating design calculations, reports, drawings, and sketches.

Requirements

Current high school student enrolled at one of the following high schools: Baker High School, Mattie T. Blount High School, Alma Bryant High School, Citronelle High School, W.P Davidson High School, John L. Leflore High School, Mary G. Montgomery High School, Murphy High School, Ben C. Rain High School, Theodore High School, C. F. Vigor High School, Lillie B. Williamson High School, Saraland High School, Alabama School of Math and Science, Faulkner Career Tech Center.
GPA: 2.7 or above
Familiarity with design standards and codes.
Working knowledge of CAD software, either AutoCAD, Microstation or both.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time.

Responsibilities

Familiarity with and utilization of department engineering design and drafting standards.
Assisting in developing conceptual layouts and studies to determine the simplest, most efficient approach to solving engineering tasks.
Assisting in producing estimate level preliminary designs and material take-offs.
Assisting in producing detail design calculations, spreadsheets, reports, drawings, and sketches for various projects.
Assisting engineers and designers in resolving routine layout and detailing problems.
