About The Position

The Hemodialysis Technician functions as a part of the multi-disciplinary team providing hemodialysis treatments. The Hemodialysis Technician works under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse and reports to the Assistant Department Manager.

Requirements

  • Hemodialysis Technician certification or past certification and ability to recertify within 6 months required
  • BCLS competency within 3 months of hire
  • Minimum of one year experience as a Hemodialysis Technician.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal skills; oral and written skills to effectively and appropriately communicate with patients/families, physicians and other hospital caregivers
  • Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area as related to the principle duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Self motivated and able to work independently

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an inpatient dialysis setting preferred
  • Previous college course work in a scientific field preferred

Responsibilities

  • Completes clerical duties as assigned.
  • Orders supplies and maintains inventory of specialty supplies.
  • Performs water checks prior to any treatments being performed and between treatments and documents. Notifies RN of any areas that do not meet criteria.
  • Prepares hemodialysis machines.
  • Administers central venous catheter and fistula/graft care using approved aseptic/sterile technique.
  • Cannulates patient using approved techniques or utilizes hemodialysis catheter to attach hemodialysis tubing.
  • Operates hemodialysis equipment using physician prescription under the direction of an RN.
  • Administers saline bolus as directed by the RN through the hemodialysis machine to respond to patient condition.
  • Initiates and terminates a dialysis treatment according to established procedures, after checking with RN responsible for pre-dialysis assessment and evaluation.
  • Ultra-filtrates the patient according to physician orders, under the supervision of an RN.
  • Monitors the patients vital signs, physiological changes during the hemodialysis treatment and charts appropriately, including progress and vital signs. Notifies RN of any changes.
  • Conducts blood glucose testing and reports results to RN.
  • Obtains ordered laboratory specimens.
  • Maintains skills to remain competent for operation of hemodialysis and related equipment
