About The Position

The Department of Pathology, Division of Laboratory Medicine, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a Hematopathologist with American Board of Pathology (ABP) board certification for a tenure-earning Associate or Full Professor position. Applicants must have an MD, MD/PhD or DO and completed a formal ABP-fellowship in hematopathology. Candidates must have special clinical proficiency in lymph node pathology, bone marrow interpretation and experience in interpretation of flow cytometric and molecular data. Prospective faculty will be expected to provide leadership as Section Head of Hematopathology; deliver diagnostic and consultative services; participate in fellow, resident, and medical student education; and engage in ongoing collaborative efforts with a multidisciplinary team of well-established clinical investigators. Expertise in molecular hematopathology, machine learning algorithms, the application of artificial intelligence to laboratory medicine, and digital pathology are highly desirable. Salary, rank, and tenure status are commensurate with experience and background. Recruitment for this position comes at an opportune time, as the Section and Division are experiencing significant growth in our clinical service, educational, and research missions. The Section serves UAB Hospitals (over 1,200 beds; the eighth largest in the USA), offering a wide array of hematopathology services. Approximately 22,500 cases are processed each year, including 9,000 flow cytometry cases, 2,500 bone marrow biopsies, 2,500 lymph node biopsies and consult cases, and 8,500 hemoglobin capillary electrophoresis (CE) analysis. At the heart of UAB’s downtown campus, opportunities abound for research collaboration. Unique research opportunities for an academic hematopathologist include: 1. Access to institutional research cores, offering cutting-edge resources and expertise to support groundbreaking research in hematologic malignancies. 2. Access to the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and large community of cancer biologists to pursue collaborative research. 3. The presence of a large collaborative immunology research community and well-organized Immunology Institute with a solid research infrastructure including weekly research seminar series and pilot grants.
