About The Position

This role assists a journeyman electrician in the planning, layout, installation, testing, and repair of electrical systems. The Helper 2 will learn to use various tools, perform minor repairs, maintain tools and equipment, and ensure a clean and organized work area. Safety is a paramount concern, and the individual will participate in all safety-related processes, including hazard identification, stop-work authority, and accident reporting. The position also involves coordinating with other crafts, producing quality work, and learning to read and understand electrical plans and specifications.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of experience working as an electrician or similar craft as a helper or a combination of work experience and training.
  • Working knowledge of the electrical craft.
  • Developing knowledge in the fabrication, installation, or maintenance of electrical wiring, conduit, systems, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Experience testing electrical systems with appropriate tools.
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Must have all necessary tools (see Electrician helper tool list).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search).

Responsibilities

  • Learn to use appropriate hand and power tools to properly assist the electrician in performing duties, including measuring, cutting, and bending wire and conduit; drilling holes for wiring; pulling wiring through openings; and assisting in lifting, positioning, and fastening objects.
  • Perform minor repairs, such as replacing fuses, light sockets, bulbs, and switches.
  • Maintain tools and equipment and keep supplies and parts in order; disassemble, repair, and reassemble defective electrical equipment, such as motors.
  • Load, transport, unload, and furnish the electrician with materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Clean work area and restock supplies and materials as necessary.
  • Help install all other related items in accordance with applicable plans and specifications; perform other routine duties as directed by an experienced craft worker.
  • Participate in all safety-related processes and programs as requested.
  • Engage with the work team to ensure zero injuries.
  • Watch for hazards and report any concerns to the supervisor or safety professional.
  • Use stop work authority if needed until an issue is resolved.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to the supervisor; participate in the investigation process as needed.
  • Participate in all pre-job work planning and safety discussions.
  • Identify safety hazards and take corrective action to eliminate or mitigate them.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices.
  • Understand and follow lockout/tag out procedures.
  • Attend site-specific training and follow all outlined procedures.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
  • Listen to co-workers' suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations, providing attention and feedback.
  • Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job.
  • Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities.
  • Produce quality work, meeting requirements of plans, specifications, and industry standards.
  • Learn to read and understand plans and specifications, including one-line diagrams, cable and conduit schedules, ladder diagrams, P&IDs, and loop diagrams.
  • Visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
  • Assist the journeyman in planning, layout, diagramming, installing, and/or repairing wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.
  • Learn to perform layout independently.
  • Observe the functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and the need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
  • Notify supervision of any hazards observed and utilize safety stop work authority as needed.
  • Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures.
  • Take corrective actions as needed, reporting any issues to supervision.
  • If certified to operate equipment, ensure it is correctly operated, maintained, in good working order, and that Daily Equipment Inspections are completed.
