About The Position

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dedicated Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in Cody, Wyoming. This is a full-time, entry-level position. In this role, you will work under direct supervision to perform a variety of maintenance and repair functions on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include diesel and gasoline engine overhauls, tune-ups, brake and steering system repairs, transmission work, and hydraulic system maintenance. This position provides a strong foundation for developing your mechanical expertise while supporting Wyoming’s critical transportation operations. Requirements

  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of automotive maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of electronic principles and diagnostic tools.
  • Knowledge of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment and its parts (i.e., hydraulics, hydrostatics, drive trains, gas, and diesel engine overhauls).
  • Knowledge of grease and oil specifications.
  • Knowledge of general servicing of equipment.
  • Knowledge of policies and safe work procedures.
  • 2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) OR Associate's Degree
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL
  • Must pass a series of seven fundamental tests, including Electricity, Engines, Hydraulics, Power Trains, Administrative Procedures, Rigging, and General Shop.

Nice To Haves

  • Completed any equipment certification exams.
  • Welder Certification card for FH&V Fillet and FH&V Grove 3/4" welds is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts a wide variety of preventive maintenance and/or repairs on various diesel and automotive equipment, along with other self-propelled or towed equipment.
  • Performs safety inspections on all types of automotive and diesel equipment.
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems with vehicles and equipment.
  • Rigs and fabricates new equipment to district standards.
  • Creates repair orders.
  • Responsible for the inventory of the shop, equipment, and supplies.
  • Designs and fabricates parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications.
