About The Position

Under general direction of the Division Supervisor, performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance work and operates the largest and most complex equipment in the City’s fleet in the construction, maintenance, and replacement-related tasks in the Public Works departments. It is differentiated from the Truck Driver classification by the increased diversity, complexity of assignments, and type of equipment operated on a consistent basis.

Requirements

  • Seven (7) years of experience operating medium-size to heavy equipment.
  • Must possess a high school diploma.
  • Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills and other characteristics may be substituted for the above qualifications.
  • May be required to secure certifications as determined by area of assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of medium and heavy equipment.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Refers needed repairs to the supervisor.
  • Maintains equipment in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repair work on heavy equipment as aid to operation.
  • May be responsible for contacting Utility Companies to determine location of gas, telephone, power, water and sewer lines sources prior to excavation.
  • May act as crew leader in the absence of the lead worker or supervisor.
  • Performs a variety of manual labor duties at construction sites.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • May operate sewer truck, backhoe, loader, crane, TV inspection router and other equipment used in the excavation, construction and maintenance of sewer lines, system and facilities.
