About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Operator operates various types of heavy equipment, including graders, dozers, scrapers, and excavators, to move, level, and distribute earth and to push trees and rocks in preparation for road and building construction. The operator works safely and efficiently, maintains equipment, and performs earthmoving tasks such as cutting ditches and slopes, clearing brush, and shaping and dressing slopes. The role requires maintaining grade using grade checkers, machine-mounted lasers or GPS, or other methods, and working productively with a crew in a high-production construction environment. The employee regularly works around moving machinery and other construction activities, including in tight, congested areas. Work takes place outdoors and involves exposure to weather, noise, fumes, airborne particles, vibration, and other conditions described below. The position requires the ability to work 55–60 hours per week, including Saturdays.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED, or one to three months of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read and interpret maps, sketches, drawings, specifications, and technical manuals.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
Ability to work 55–60 hours per week, including Saturdays.
Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl for long periods.
Ability to handle and manipulate objects repetitively.
Ability to distinguish construction-site sounds, including backup alarms and voices.
Ability to frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.
Close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

Operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently, which may include driving a company vehicle.
Perform daily machinery maintenance checks, including checking fluids and grease.
Use machine controls to cut ditches, slopes, and grades; clear brush; shape and dress slopes; and perform other earthmoving activities.
Maintain grade by communicating with a grade checker, using machine-mounted lasers or GPS, or working without GPS.
Set up, set, and take down rotating laser equipment or a base station.
Read grade stakes and blueprints or plans, perform arithmetic, and use a scale ruler or other basic grade-determining functions.
Work for extended periods in a high-production environment and operate in tight, congested areas around other activities.
Account for how weight distribution affects stability and rated operating capacity.
Work efficiently with other crew members while prioritizing safety, efficiency, and productivity.
Perform other duties as assigned.
