About The Position

The Town of Lunenburg is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator for its Department of Public Works. This hands-on municipal position supports the maintenance, repair, and construction of DPW assets, roads, infrastructure, and public services. The role is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week, non-exempt, benefited Grade 2 Teamsters Local 170 union position. It reports to the DPW Director. The position remains open until filled.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three or more years of experience operating heavy equipment and trucks in construction or road maintenance.
• Thorough knowledge of Class B CDL vehicles and heavy equipment operation.
• Valid Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Class 2B Hoisting Engineers License, or ability to obtain both within six months of hire.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Nice To Haves

• Prior public works experience.
• Residency within 30 minutes of the DPW building.
• Applicants who already hold both required licenses receive first preference.

Responsibilities

• Operate vehicles and equipment, including trucks, plows, tractors, backhoes, and front-end loaders.
• Use power-driven and hand tools.
• Perform plowing, minor vehicle service and maintenance, excavation, and tree work.
• Perform work outside normal hours when needed, especially during emergencies and adverse weather conditions.
• Maintain, repair, and assist with construction of Department of Public Works assets.
