About The Position

CenterPoint Energy is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) who can manage their time effectively and prioritize tasks assigned by management. The HEO will be responsible for safely operating equipment to load, secure, and unload materials and equipment, transporting them to and from various job sites. This role requires knowledge of rigging and cribbing, the ability to perform complex lifts, and interpret standard hand signals. Additionally, HEOs are expected to support crew members with various tasks, including lifting, spotting, holding, site cleanup, and paperwork, as directed by supervision.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent knowledge of English, basic mathematics, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a heavy equipment operator.
  • Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) certification prior to employment.
  • Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull and lower loads manually (up to approx. 60 lbs.) and using blocks and ropes (up to approx. 200 lbs.).
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, balance, climb, crawl, reach, stand, walk, pull, lift, use fingers and grasp on a daily basis for extended periods of time (possibly hours).
  • Ability to twist the upper body and neck while driving.
  • Ability to reach and work overhead for extended periods of time (possibly hours).
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle, including ability to enter and exit the vehicle unassisted.
  • Ability to move about over, under and around vehicle and/or equipment to operate, load/unload cargo, and perform inspections/checks and minor maintenance.
  • Ability to pass a required physical strength and endurance demonstration commensurate with the job.
  • Ability to hear instructions or warnings from a person working approx. 100 ft. aloft over high level of ambient noise.
  • Ability to maintain mental alertness and concentrate due to potential dangers associated with driving and operating heavy equipment.
  • Ability to be included in random drug screen pool required for DOT drivers and DOT safety sensitive positions.
  • Ability to work in close proximity to rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and/or chemicals.
  • Ability to work in shop and/or field and tolerate exposure to hot, dirty and/or greasy equipment and noise.
  • Ability to respond to emergency calls, 7 days per week, 24 hours per day.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Must arrange own transportation to work location.
  • Ability to perform functions on a variety of shifts and schedules, in severe conditions (weather, dust, heavy pollen, etc.) and/or emergency at any time, night or day.

Nice To Haves

  • Existing Crane Certification preferred or must be able to obtain a Crane Certification within 150 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate Company vehicles, including those rated at 26,000+ GVW, in rural and city traffic, and other equipment necessary for the hiring department.
  • Operate equipment such as Mobile Crane (Swing Cab or Fixed Cab), Telescopic Boom Cranes (Swing Cab or Fixed Cab), and Articulating Crane.
  • Read and interpret load charts to determine the proper crane size for a lift, considering radius, height, and weight.
  • Properly assemble crane boom and counterweights.
  • Transport, relocate, and properly set up cranes in various ground conditions.
  • Exhibit crane rigging skills, including proper cable and sling size and strength, attachments, and lifting points, to ensure safety while controlling loads over electrical workers.
  • Maintain proper tagging of slings, chains, spreader bars, binders, etc., to meet OSHA standards.
  • Safeguard self, fellow workers, and the public by following safety rules in the Company’s Accident Prevention Manual and vehicle equipment operator’s manuals.
  • Maintain familiarity with and comply with all Department of Transportation (DOT) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements, obtaining and maintaining certifications as requirements change.
  • Perform routine vehicle and equipment inspections and checks for safe and efficient operation.
  • Perform minor routine mechanical maintenance as required by DOT and OSHA, including minor emergency field maintenance and replenishment of vehicle/equipment fluids.
  • Prepare job-related paperwork, including Company documents and government-required logs and reports.
  • Assist crews in job site work as directed by supervision.
  • Complete jobs in a timely manner.
  • Maintain proper working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and customers.
