About The Position

Join the City of Chattanooga's Public Works department as a Heavy Equipment Operator. This role is crucial for building and maintaining city infrastructure, including streets, utilities, and waste management. You will operate complex machinery for digging, moving earth, grading, loading, and paving. The position involves working on-site and occasionally driving over public roads, requiring adherence to traffic laws and safety guidelines. You will also operate equipment for landfill maintenance, compacting waste and earth, and maintaining paved surfaces by operating milling and asphalt paving machines. The role includes performing basic labor, using hand and power tools, and potentially using electronic devices for work tracking. This is an essential position during inclement weather and requires regular attendance and good interpersonal skills.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years of any combination of relevant education, experience, and/or training sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of this job or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid Class D driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated proficiency on a minimum of three (3) types of heavy equipment.
  • Three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Ability to use electronic devices to receive and track work.
  • Customer service centered, focused, and able to recognize or resolve customer needs according to departmental practices.

  • Knowledge of materials and equipment utilized in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Experience operating excavators, rubber-tired loaders, compactor, scraper, wood chipper, paving machine, milling machine, motor grader, bulldozer, articulated dump truck, and backhoes.

Responsibilities

  • Maneuver heavy equipment and operate complex mechanisms for digging, moving earth and materials, grading, loading, and paving city infrastructure.
  • Operate heavy equipment for landfill maintenance, including bulldozers, compactors, and scrapers to move and compact waste and earth.
  • Operate milling and asphalt paving machines to grind existing pavement and lay new pavement for roads and parking lots.
  • Perform basic and semi-skilled labor to assist in maintenance, upkeep, and construction projects.
  • Use hand tools and operate motorized tools as necessary to complete assigned tasks.
  • Use cell phones, electronic devices, and two-way radios for work tracking and communication as determined by job duties.
  • Report to or remain at work during inclement weather situations as determined by the Department Head.
  • Maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers, and citizens.
