About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Public Works and/or Designee, performs assigned duties necessary to support the Water & Wastewater Division to ensure the proper installation, maintenance, repair and/or modification of water and wastewater pipelines, mains, valves, meters, hydrants, and manholes. Performs as the lead heavy equipment operator. Duties include operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and specialized equipment used for excavation and hydro-excavation activities; daily pre-use inspection of equipment; preparation and loading of necessary materials for equipment operation; safe, efficient operation of equipment; and daily post-use maintenance and inspection of equipment. Responsible for ensuring work site safety and traffic control in compliance with rules/regulations/SOP's. Assists crews with manual labor, responds to after-hour calls and during emergency situations, and performs minor repairs and maintenance on various equipment and vehicles. May be required to assist other City departments. Performs all duties assigned to the crew he/she leads.

Requirements

High School diploma or GED.
Minimum of two (2) years of work-related experience in Construction, Municipal Water/Wastewater repair or maintenance, or related field.
Valid State of Texas Class A CDL.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City employees and officials, and the general public.
Ability to take and follow oral instructions, as well as hand signals.
Ability to work under high demands, short time constraints, and the pressure of a fast-paced work environment.
Ability to properly operate heavy equipment and hydro-excavation equipment.
Thorough knowledge of construction methods, materials and practices with particular emphasis on water and wastewater construction and repair.
Thorough knowledge of work place safety practices and procedures, including but not limited to: lockout/tagout, traffic safety, spotting, etc.
Must be able to work "on-call" or emergency hours.
Must be able to work outside normal business hours.
Must exhibit attention to detail, accuracy, and safety.
Must be able to communicate and present oneself in a professional manner.
Must be able to understand and comprehend technical instructions and manuals.
Must pass all post offer pre-employment processes and/or procedures, to include but not limited to Drug Screen, Physical Examination, and applicable Background Checks.

Nice To Haves

Grade "C" Water Distribution and/or Class II Wastewater Collection Certification from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
