The Heavy Equipment Operator is an entry-level position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission systems. This position works at various locations and may be required to travel to another state depending on customer demands. The role involves working with energized high voltage systems, requiring skill and care to protect oneself and others. The operator will also be responsible for maintaining company vehicles, equipment, and tools, and performing rigorous physical labor. A basic understanding of rigging, hand lines, lineman knot tying, and hand tools is necessary, as is the ability to follow directions and learn about materials used in line work. The position requires familiarity with primary and secondary voltage, induced voltage, and the ability to assist with transformer installation and hook-up, perform basic bucket rescues/escapes, and understand equipment setup and grounding concepts. The role also involves working at heights, in confined spaces, understanding minimum approach distances, checking voltage on transformers, and adhering to flag and tag procedures. Additionally, the operator will install and remove services, inspect rubber goods and PPE, understand when to wear PPE, make up and use hand lines, and use Kellum grips. The job requires working outdoors, often in inclement weather, and willingness to work on high voltage transmission lines. All other related work to complete the job is also required.
