About The Position

The purpose of this position is to operate medium to large track or rubber-tired construction equipment with specialized functions including digging, moving earth/materials, grading, loading, paving, and other construction and maintenance tasks. This role may serve as a lead worker, providing guidance and instruction to other crew members and reviewing their work. The operator adheres to established safety procedures, monitors the work environment, and ensures the safety of employees and the public by flagging traffic and using safety equipment. The position involves driving and operating various equipment for the maintenance and repair of City streets, rights of way, parks, water and sewer lines, and in the collection of solid waste, often in challenging conditions such as day/night hours, congested traffic, and adverse weather. Responsibilities include working as a crew member on maintenance projects, such as cutting ditches, installing water/sewer/storm drain systems, constructing/repairing streets, pothole repair, concrete work, debris hauling, dirt digging/grading, asphalt pouring/rolling, and mowing grass. The role also includes conducting pre- and post-trip inspections, loading/unloading equipment, performing daily preventive maintenance and minor repairs, and assisting with special projects like holiday decoration installation/removal and snow/ice removal. Communication with supervisors, employees, other departments, and the public is essential for coordinating activities and resolving problems. The position requires preparing and processing various forms, reports, and work orders. The operator will use a variety of hand tools and operate specific heavy equipment as needed to complete essential functions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years of experience that includes equipment operation
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A including appropriate endorsement(s)
  • May be required to obtain a trenching certification

Responsibilities

  • May serve as a lead worker; provides guidance and instruction to other crew members; and reviews work as assigned.
  • Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
  • Drives or operates a variety of varied purpose equipment in the maintenance and repair of City streets, rights of way, parks, water and sewer lines, and in the collection of solid waste; performs driving functions in a safe and efficient manner under various conditions, including day/night hours, in congested traffic, and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Works as a crew member for assigned maintenance projects: cuts and cleans ditches; installs water, sewer, and storm drain systems; constructs and repairs streets and rights of way; repairs pot holes; pours, sets and finishes concrete work; collects, hauls and disposes of debris and other materials; hauls dirt; digs and grades dirt; pours and rolls asphalt, mows grass;
  • Conducts pre- and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; loads and unloads equipment and supplies; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; completes and maintains inspection, gas usage and other associated documentation.
  • Performs daily preventive maintenance work on equipment and vehicles; services and makes minor repairs to equipment and vehicles.
  • Assists with special projects and seasonal work; installs and removes holiday decorations; installs and removes banners; spreads salt on City streets as needed; clears streets and sidewalks of debris following special events; removes and replaces staging materials from sites as needed.
  • Uses a variety of hand tools including shovels, hammers, pick axes, rakes, pipe wrenches, channel locks, transit level, tape measure, and carpentry tools.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents.
  • Receives various forms, reports, work orders, application instructions or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Operates one or more of the following: motor graders, scraper, excavator, compactor, front-end loader, track hoe, backhoe, tractor/trailer and lowboy, milling machine, paving machine, boring machine, jack hammer, vactor truck, dump truck, mowers, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
  • Attends meetings, workshops and training as necessary.
  • Assists in preparing for and cleaning up after hurricanes and other natural disasters as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as required, requested and assigned.
