The Equipment Operator, reporting to the Construction Manager, is responsible for the safe operation of various heavy equipment on a cable plow crew, supporting underground power cable installation. This includes, but is not limited to, dozers, excavators, rippers, and tractors. This is a high-stakes, physically demanding role requiring precision, strong safety practices, and effective coordination due to involvement with high-voltage underground power cable systems. The operator is also tasked with conducting pre-operational inspections, maintaining equipment in safe working condition, and reporting any issues or required repairs to management.

Requirements

  • Class 5 Drivers License with a clean Driver’s Abstract
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 1–5 years of experience working on a plow crew, transmission/distribution line work, or underground cable installation
  • Proficient in heavy equipment operation, including: D8 Cat ripper, D6 Cat dozer, Tractor units, 360 excavator (primary equipment for trenching and working around existing utilities)
  • Experience with trenching crews and underground cable placement
  • Valid Ground Disturbance certification (or equivalent)
  • Strong understanding of cable management and installation practices
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, as well as criminal and general background checks

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently on construction sites
  • Operate heavy equipment, primarily excavators, for trenching and cable installation
  • Perform precise digging and plowing to required depths, with an understanding of soil classifications
  • Install high-voltage power cables safely and efficiently
  • Coordinate closely with crew members to ensure smooth, damage-free operations around existing utilities
  • Maintain situational awareness and adhere to all safety protocols
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment, including oil changes and greasing, and minor repairs and troubleshooting
  • Work collaboratively with the heavy-duty equipment shop for major repairs
  • Maintain and operate support equipment, including fuel tidy tanks, hand and small tools, and grease guns
  • Conduct pre-operational inspections
  • Maintain equipment in safe working condition
  • Promptly report any issues or required repairs to management
