About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) is responsible for safely operating light to heavy construction equipment on gas construction projects. Duties include operating machinery to move earth and materials, supporting site preparation, performing equipment inspections and maintenance, and supporting field crews as directed by the Foreman or Superintendent. Requirements

  • Strong understanding of safe equipment operation and hazard recognition.
  • Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions in a fast-paced field environment.
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude and situational awareness.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills with crew members and supervisors.
  • Dependable, punctual, and safety-focused at all times.
  • Skid steers, mini-excavators, backhoes, and front-end loaders in pipeline trench and site prep contexts

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plans, and perform minor layout tasks (Levels II–IV).
  • Leadership, mentoring, and field coordination abilities (Levels III–IV).
  • Documentation accuracy and equipment log maintenance (Level IV).

Responsibilities

  • Trench excavation and backfill for high-pressure gas pipeline construction
  • Site preparation and grading for pipeline corridors and facility construction
  • Anomaly dig excavation and support for gas system maintenance programs
  • Regulator station and facility site development support
  • DOT-regulated pipeline construction environments requiring OQ compliance awareness
  • Safely operate construction equipment on active project sites.
  • Conduct daily pre-shift inspections; fuel, lubricate, and maintain equipment.
  • Follow all company and site-specific safety policies; wear required PPE at all times.
  • Report hazards, malfunctions, and unsafe conditions to the Foreman immediately.
  • Operates light equipment under direct supervision. Focused on building foundational safety habits, equipment knowledge, and field awareness.
  • Operate light or moderate equipment such as skid steers, mini-excavators, backhoes, and front-end loaders under direct supervision.
  • Assist with trenching, grading, and basic excavation tasks as directed by the Foreman.
  • Conduct daily pre-shift equipment inspections; lubricate and fuel equipment as directed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and follow all housekeeping standards.
  • Follow all company and site-specific safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements at all times.
  • Report any hazards, equipment malfunctions, or unsafe conditions to the Foreman immediately.
  • Travel to remote project sites as needed; may include extended field assignments.
