Heavy Equipment Operator (Dozer)

TractionToronto, ON

About The Position

We are seeking a high-precision Heavy Equipment Operator specialized in Dozer operations to join our civil construction team. This role is specifically designed for a professional who holds or is looking to finish their requirements to achieve their Red Seal Endorsement (RSE). In the Canadian heavy construction industry, a Red Seal operator is recognized for their elite ability to manage grade, soil conditions, and machine health. Whether you are a certified Journeyperson or a senior operator in the final stages of your apprenticeship, you will be expected to work to the Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS), ensuring production targets are met with surgical accuracy and uncompromising safety.

Requirements

  • Certification Status: Must be a Journeyperson or a Senior Apprentice currently looking to finish their requirements to achieve their Red Seal Endorsement (RSE).
  • Technical Proficiency: Extensive experience operating various dozer sizes (D6 to D10 equivalent). Deep understanding of soil compaction and mechanical leverage.
  • Spatial Awareness: Exceptional ability to visualize 3D designs from 2D blueprints and grade stakes.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to work long shifts in a high-vibration environment and perform manual tasks in all Canadian weather conditions.
  • Driver’s License: Valid Class 5 license (Class 1 or 3 is a significant asset for mobilizing equipment).

Responsibilities

  • Equipment Pre-Start & Maintenance: Perform rigorous "walk-around" inspections. Monitor fluid levels, track tension, and blade wear. Identify and document mechanical issues before they lead to downtime.
  • Precision Grading: Execute bulk excavation, pioneering, and fine grading. Master the use of 6-way (PAT) and straight blades to achieve engineered specifications for slopes, ditches, and building pads.
  • Technology Integration: Operate dozers equipped with GPS and laser-guided grade control systems (e.g., Trimble, Topcon) to ensure millimeter-accurate results.
  • Material Management: Efficiently move and stockpile diverse materials, including clay, gravel, and shot rock, while maintaining optimal machine balance and traction.
  • Site Safety & Awareness: Maintain constant communication with ground crews and other operators via radio. Adhere to strict lockout/tag-out (LOTO) and utility locate protocols (Call Before You Dig).
  • Environmental Stewardship: Implement erosion control measures and ensure work is performed in compliance with provincial environmental regulations regarding runoff and sensitive habitats.
  • Mentorship: If certified, provide technical coaching to junior operators. If finishing requirements, work with our Journeypersons to master Major Work Activities (MWAs) such as specialized finish grading and complex site drainage.

Benefits

  • The Path to Completion: For those finishing their RSE, we provide the diverse project exposure—from highway construction to large-scale land clearing—required to successfully challenge the Interprovincial Exam.
  • Competitive Compensation: Wages that reflect your status as a nationally certified professional and your ability to hit grade on the first pass.
  • National Mobility: An RSE credential that is recognized in every province and territory, ensuring your skills are in demand from the oil patch to urban infrastructure projects.
