About The Position

The City of Greensboro is seeking a skilled and dependable Heavy Equipment Operator to help keep our community clean and running smoothly. This role offers meaningful work that residents see every day. As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you will operate front-loader and side-loader collection vehicles, as well as a knuckle boom truck when needed. This is hands-on, production-driven work that requires focus, stamina, and a strong commitment to safety. Your performance directly impacts service reliability across the city. Solid Waste Services plays a vital role in maintaining public health, environmental quality, and neighborhood pride. Our operators are on the front lines, providing dependable collection services in all weather conditions. Teamwork, safety, and accountability are core to our success. The work you do keeps Greensboro clean and operating efficiently. Operators work closely together with limited supervision and strong camaraderie. Solid Waste operations are critical year-round. The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for servicing approximately 150+ stationary containers (dumpsters) and up to 1,000 carts per day, safely and efficiently. This position operates on a 40-hour flex schedule based on workload demands. Early morning start times, holiday work, emergency response, weekend shifts, and inclement weather operations may be required with little notice. Good attendance and reliability are essential.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED, with 1+ years experience in the Solid Waste Industry (i.e., refuse, recycling)
  • No High School Diploma/GED, with 4+ years of experience in the Solid Waste Industry (i.e., refuse, recycling)
  • A or B Commercial Driver's License
  • Must maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License
  • Must maintain a reliable means of contact
  • Good attendance and reliability are essential.

Nice To Haves

  • Training on front-loader or other automated collection equipment

Responsibilities

  • Operate front-loader, side-loader, and knuckle boom collection vehicles
  • Follow written and route-based instructions
  • Operate two-way radios and communicate effectively in verbal and written form
  • Prepare survey sheets and vehicle inspection reports
  • Maintain a safe driving record and adhere to all safety standards
  • Service approximately 150+ stationary containers (dumpsters) and up to 1,000 carts per day, safely and efficiently.
