About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Operator Apprenticeship Program at Granite provides apprentices with the opportunity to develop the competencies required of a journey-level Heavy Equipment Operator. This program combines on-the-job training with instructor-led sessions, where apprentices will learn to safely perform pre and post-operational checks, and operate and maintain various pieces of equipment used in building, highway, and heavy construction projects. Upon successful completion of all requirements and demonstration of competence, apprentices will receive a journey-level certification from the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship, and may be considered for promotion to Heavy Equipment Operator journey-level status.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Demonstrate good communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn core skills through hands-on training and working on the job to gain practical experience.
  • Comply, understand, and support corporate safety initiatives to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Ability and willingness to abide by Granite’s Code of Conduct daily.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency, preferred.
  • Successfully completed or enrolled in a Career and Technical Education program such as Pima JTED, preferred.
  • 1-2 years of Construction experience, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Complete 144-hours of instructor related training annually.
  • Complete 2,000 hours of on-the-job training (OJT) under the guidance and direction of a journey-level and/or Supervisor.
  • Apply knowledge obtained through classroom instruction, including but not limited to safety procedures and practices for operating heavy equipment, including but not limit to Backhoe, Loader, Forklift, Excavator, Skid Steer, Scraper, Compaction Equipment, Dozer, Dump Truck.
  • Learn safe and efficient methods for performing various tasks including but not limited to road building, fine grading, finishing, sloping, banking, backfilling, demolition, ditching, loading, excavating, stockpiling, road surface maintenance, building and maintaining road berms, loading trucks, and trenching.
  • Support team members in safely performing various tasks on project site as required.
