About The Position

Heavy Equipment Mechanic (EAGLE 2026-25677): Bowhead seeks a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in support of the Maintenance and Supply Divisions at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, MD. The Maintenance Division Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs a combination of tasks to support departmental operations. Typical duties include analyzing malfunctions and repairing/rebuilding heavy equipment. This position is governed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and employees are required to join after beginning employment.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is in addition to at least two (2+) years’ experience as a heavy equipment mechanic AND at least two (2+) years of experience as a qualified welder.
  • Must possess a valid state Commercial Driver License (CDL) with acceptable driving record pertinent to the position, or be able to obtain a valid state CDL within 90 days of hiring.
  • Must maintain the CDL and an acceptable driving record during the duration of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain welding qualification in accordance with American Welding Society (AWS) standards for the equipment and material utilized.
  • Basic to intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
  • Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Public Trust level.
  • Due to the location of this work, U.S. citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Any prior experience with government contracts and locations is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes malfunctions.
  • Repairs, rebuilds, and maintains power equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
  • Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
  • Dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools.
  • Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
  • Replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions.
  • Tests and overhauls equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
  • Welds broken parts.
  • Cleans parts and assembles and disassembles equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
