About The Position

This is an internal-only job posting, available to current Montgomery County Government employees only. The Department of General Services, Fleet Management Services is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Technician Lead for the Heavy Equipment Shop to perform advanced skilled inspection, maintenance and repairs on diesel, alternative fuel and/or gasoline powered heavy and related equipment and will function as a lead worker. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $69,601 to $89,991, based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).
  • Prior experience serving as a Mechanic Technician II, with six (6) years of verifiable, progressively responsible experience in problem diagnosis, repair, maintenance and inspection of medium and heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment.
  • Possession and maintenance of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician Certification in Medium and Heavy Trucks (T1-T8).
  • Possession and maintenance of a Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements, issued by applicant’s state of residence.
  • Possession and maintenance of US Environmental Protection Agency Air Conditioning Certification (Clean Air Act, 1990, Section 608 and 609).
  • Possession and maintenance of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Industrial Forklift Certification.
  • Completion of the Fleet Management Services Mechanic Technician Training Program (FMSMTTP).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing preventive maintenance, service inspections and advanced level diagnostic and repairs on medium and heavy-duty trucks and equipment following established standards, reference manuals, and maintenance schedules.
  • Experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing and/or overhauling of major components and systems including gas and diesel engines, automatic and manual transmissions, differentials and transaxles.
  • Experience working on advanced heavy truck and equipment vehicle systems, such as diesel emissions, air brakes, hydraulics, PTO's, auxiliary drives, multiplex wiring, and pneumatics.
  • Experience using a computer/laptop and various office-suite (such as MS Office), enterprise (such as Oracle) and stand-alone software/systems to communicate, word process, requisition; manage records and conduct research.
  • Experience using a Fleet Management Inventory System (such as FASTER or Asset Works).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a lead worker, providing on-the-job training, mentoring, and technical instruction to less experienced Mechanic Technicians.
  • Perform advanced skilled inspection, maintenance, and repairs on diesel, alternative fuel, and/or gasoline-powered heavy and related equipment.
  • Exercise independent, advanced-level judgment while performing inspections, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a full array of medium and heavy-duty truck systems.
  • Select and safely use proper tools, equipment, diagnostic devices, service manuals, technical references, and efficient repair procedures.
  • Serve as the shop lead for new vehicle intake, inspection, and preparation, including coordinating receipt, performing pre-delivery inspections, documenting deficiencies, and coordinating warranty repairs.
  • Serve as the lead for manufacturer campaigns, safety recalls, and technical service bulletins, including monitoring, coordinating repairs, and maintaining documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance to other mechanics, assist with troubleshooting complex repairs, help prioritize daily workloads, and promote safe and efficient shop operations.
  • Provide day-to-day direction to shop personnel and assist with shop coordination during the absence of a Crew Chief when operational needs require.
