About The Position

This posting may be used to fill multiple positions at various locations within the Fleet Department. There are two levels for this position: Heavy Equipment Mechanic III and Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic III performs a variety of highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of light-duty, medium-duty, heavy trailer, truck, and road maintenance equipment. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV performs lead duties over Heavy Equipment Mechanic staff in the Fleet Department, in addition to performing highly skilled maintenance and repair duties. The IV may also fill in for the supervisor in their absence. Both positions involve diagnostics, major and minor repairs, and general maintenance on various vehicle systems including engines, drive trains, emissions, cooling, fuel, electrical, air conditioning, air, and hydraulic systems. Safety repairs to comply with DOT regulations are also a key part of the role. Record-keeping using a computerized fleet management system and completing necessary paperwork are required. Emergency road calls may be necessary. Rebuilding of engines, transmissions, and rear axles is also part of the duties. Fabrication and installation of new equipment or redesign of existing equipment may be required. Maintaining a clean and safe work area, tools, and equipment is essential. Answering phone and radio calls, ordering and picking up parts, and providing instruction on equipment operation are also responsibilities. Welding repairs and on-site service calls are included.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency preferred
  • Three (3) years or more experience performing mechanical repairs on all heavy-duty vehicles and equipment required (Heavy Equipment Mechanic III)
  • Six (6) years or more of progressively responsible experience performing mechanical repairs on all heavy-duty vehicles and equipment required (Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV)
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class B Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement within 120 of hire required (Heavy Equipment Mechanic III)
  • Possession of, a valid Class B Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement at hire required (Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV)
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain Forklift Operator Certification within 120 days of hire required
  • Preventative Maintenance Inspection (PMI) Certification required (Heavy Equipment Mechanic III)
  • Preventative Maintenance Inspection (PMI) Certification at hire required (Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV)
  • Possession of, one to three (1-3) current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications in Medium/Heavy Truck (Heavy Equipment Mechanic III)
  • Possession of, four (4) current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications in Medium/Heavy Truck (Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV)
  • Must successfully pass a background check.
  • Must be able to pass post-job offer physical screening.
  • Must maintain licenses/certifications current.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of, a valid Colorado Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement preferred (Heavy Equipment Mechanic III)
  • Possession of a valid Colorado Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement within 120 days of hire required (Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV)
  • Possession of an ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Master Certification preferred
  • Associate's Degree in Automotive and/or Diesel repair preferred (Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV)
  • Required PMI Certification does apply to the ASE count and/or similar or related Manufacturer Certification(s) will be considered in lieu of the other required ASE Certifications.
  • For preferred qualifications, the substitution of any combination of relevant and related education, training, and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability may be considered, including by way of example, specific experience or skill-based qualifications that may substitute for certain educational requirements, or a combination of relevant education and experience including supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs and general maintenance on gas hybrid, gasoline and diesel engines and major drive train components transmissions, differentials and drive units.
  • Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs on emissions systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical circuits, air conditioning systems, air systems and hydraulic systems.
  • Performs safety repairs to comply with DOT regulations including air and hydraulic brake systems, repairs and adjusts lights, aligns front and rear ends; balances tires, adjusts drive lines and repairs damaged vehicle bodies.
  • Maintains necessary records of all work performed using computerized fleet management system.
  • Completes all necessary paperwork related to job assignments and time cards.
  • Performs general in shop repairs of minor system failures including lights, brakes, brake adjustments, air system leaks, two-way radio system installations, cooling system problems and fuel system problems.
  • Makes emergency road calls, which may require wrecker service or special transportation.
  • Rebuilds gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, single and twin screw rear axles and compressor systems.
  • Performs engineering, layout, fabrication and installation of new equipment or repairs and redesign on existing equipment.
  • Cleans and organizes shop and equipment, changes solvents and disposes of trash and waste as required.
  • Maintains work area, tools and equipment in a clean and safe condition; responsible for reporting unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor.
  • Answers phone and radio calls.
  • Orders and picks up parts.
  • Provides instruction on equipment operation.
  • Makes welding repairs.
  • Performs on-site service and emergency calls.
  • Performs lead duties over Heavy Equipment Mechanic staff (Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV only).
  • May fill in for supervisor in their absence (Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV only).
