About The Position

The State Highway Administration's (SHA) District 5 is currently recruiting for a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician I (HEMT I) position. The current vacancy exists at the Annapolis Shop (Anne Arundel County). The Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician I will perform routine repair and maintenance work of motor vehicles, heavy equipment, power tools that are utilized by the maintenance shop to perform routine and emergency maintenance of SHA highways, bridges and right of way areas. Responsible for performing journey level of mechanical repairs, diagnosing various system malfunctions, standard preventive maintenance services and assisting with major automotive repairs.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • One and one-half (1.5) years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy-duty construction equipment.
  • Possess and maintain a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland.
  • Possess and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver's License valid in the state of Maryland during the probationary period.
  • Must be available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of a facility.
  • Subject to being on call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.
  • May be required to undergo periodic medical testing and have the ability to wear a respirator if working with or exposed to hazardous materials.
  • Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Employees in this class may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver's License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles, depending on the type of equipment operated.
  • Employees will be required to successfully complete agency certification programs to be eligible for permanent status in this classification.
