About The Position

This is an entry-level repair and maintenance work on motor vehicles, diesel powered equipment and/or construction/maintenance equipment. This position requires knowledge of basic principles of operation and construction of diesel and gas-powered engines; knowledge of proper use, care, and maintenance of various standard hand tools; knowledge of repair and service concepts, principles, testing devices, tools, meters, etc. involved in the repair and servicing of heavy road maintenance equipment. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports, carry out instructions, communicate and work effectively with others. Employees receive close supervision from a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor or other designated supervisor. Employees in this class are considered essential employees and are subject to call 24 hours a day, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of the facility. Employees may be required to work rotating shifts including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. In the event of hazardous weather or highway conditions, employees will be called to duty during off-hours in order to maintain and repair equipment. Employees are required to work outdoors in all types of weather and may be exposed to extreme heat, fumes, exhaust and hazardous materials. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • None (experience may substitute for education).
  • Possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland.
  • List license number and expiration date on the application.
  • Obtain a Class B CDL license within six months of appointment.
  • Successfully complete agency certification programs to be eligible for permanent status.
  • Maintain a reliable communication link, at their own expense, for emergency callback requirements.
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) may be substituted for two years of the required education.
  • Certification as a Master Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.
  • Obtain Special Commercial Driver's License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on the type of equipment operated.
  • Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.
