Job Title: Temporary Equipment Mechanic I Work with a large, mission-driven public agency that supports essential water, environmental, and infrastructure services for a major metropolitan region. Location: San Jose, CA (Onsite) Assignment Details: Duration: 960 Hours in a fiscal year Work Schedule: Full-Time: 40hrs/week Start Date: to be discussed Pay Rate: $34.92 Role Overview: Performs preventive maintenance, inspection, diagnostics, and repair of gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fuel vehicles, heavy and light construction equipment, and other power-driven machinery. The role supports fleet reliability, safety, and operational readiness through troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and equipment service activities. Equipment Mechanic I works under close supervision while developing proficiency.

Requirements

Minimum 1 year of experience performing repair and maintenance of vehicles or mechanical equipment
Technical Skills: Automotive and diesel engine repair.
Preventive maintenance practices.
Mechanical diagnostics and troubleshooting.
Hydraulic system maintenance and repair.
Brake, suspension, steering, transmission, and drivetrain repair.
Electrical and electronic system diagnostics.
Welding and minor metal fabrication.
Reading technical manuals, diagrams, and specifications.
Use of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
Vehicle safety inspections and emissions compliance testing.
Basic computer proficiency and desktop applications (Mechanic II).
Soft Skills: Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Customer service orientation when interacting with staff, vendors, contractors, and the public.
Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships.

Education / Certifications: High school diploma or equivalent (completion of twelfth grade)
Certifications / Licenses: Valid California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
Ability to obtain (Mechanic I) or possess (Mechanic II) a California Class A Driver's License with required endorsements within six months of appointment.

Responsibilities

Inspect, diagnose, and troubleshoot vehicles, construction equipment, mobile cranes, and other mechanical equipment.
Estimate repair requirements, labor, materials, and equipment needed for maintenance activities.
Repair and maintain fuel, ignition, electrical, electronic, steering, suspension, cooling, braking, hydraulic, air conditioning, and signaling systems.
Diagnose and repair transmissions, engines, emission control systems, brakes, and drivetrains.
Perform preventive maintenance, lubrication services, tune-ups, tire replacement, and safety inspections.
Read and interpret service manuals, diagrams, specifications, and parts lists.
Rebuild and overhaul engines and major equipment components.
Conduct welding and minor fabrication work as required.
Prepare newly acquired vehicles and equipment for operational service.
Utilize diagnostic tools, power tools, hand tools, and specialized repair equipment.
Support hazardous waste handling, containment, storage, and spill control activities.
Comply with safety regulations, policies, and disaster service worker responsibilities.
