About The Position

The Heavy Duty Mechanic plays a critical role in keeping the Calgary Airport’s operations running safely and efficiently. This hands-on role is responsible for maintaining and repairing a diverse fleet of specialized airport equipment—including runway sweepers, snow removal units, and vegetation control machinery—ensuring all assets are reliable and ready for operation in a dynamic airfield environment. Working both independently and as part of a team, the Heavy Duty Mechanic conducts inspections, diagnoses mechanical issues, and completes timely, high-quality repairs that minimize downtime and support uninterrupted airport operations. This position offers the opportunity to work with unique, purpose-built equipment while contributing directly to the safety and performance of one of Canada’s busiest airports. This role operates on a shift schedule to support 24/7 airport operations.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a RAIC
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Airside Vehicle Operator’s Permit (AVOP)
  • Journeyman’s Certificate as a Heavy Equipment Technician or related preference given to candidates who also have their red seal endorsement.
  • 1 – 3 years' experience in a heavy-duty mechanics field
  • Understanding of engines (diesel, gas, propane) as well as electric drive motors
  • Knowledge of hydraulic principles and systems
  • Problem solving abilities to address diagnostic and fabrication needs
  • Candidates must successfully complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as part of the hiring process
  • Candidates will be required to provide a valid Class 5 driver’s license and a current driver’s abstract as part of the hiring process

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose equipment faults using computerized diagnostic equipment, hydraulic flow meters, gauges, service manuals, and personal expertise
  • Perform repairs and overhaul components on all airport vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Implement maintenance procedures according to manufacturers and Calgary Airports service schedules
  • Perform non-structural welding repairs where necessary on a variety of metals
  • Fabricate specialized parts when necessary (ex. pins, hubs, hydraulic lines)
  • Document all repairs, updated processes, maintenance processes, and any updated procedures where applicable
  • Adherence to all safety practices
