About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive, Advanced Journey/Lead to help us Keep Alaska Moving! This role involves professionally maintaining all heavy-duty and light duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports, and other user agency vehicles. The incumbent must be able to resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods, performing routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment. This includes diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, along with fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems (air and electrical) for light and heavy-duty equipment. As part of the State Equipment Fleet (SEF) team, you will have a direct impact on the department mission of “Keeping Alaskans Moving through Service and Infrastructure.” SEF's mission is to provide all state agencies with safe, economical vehicles they need to accomplish their mission. Your work will aid in keeping essential vehicles and equipment on our roads and runways to keep Alaskans moving safely around our state.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.

  • Ability to use digital volt ohm meter.
  • Willingness to attend and pass factory authorized schools on specific vehicle, equipment, or aircraft and apply acquired training to specific problems.
  • Knowledge of drive trains, suspension systems, and emissions (for advanced journey workers).
  • Knowledge of techniques and procedures of light duty automotive equipment maintenance and repair using electronic diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of techniques and procedures of heavy equipment maintenance and repair using electronic diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) practices while at an airport duty station.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations regarding performance standards and specifications of ARFF equipment while at an airport duty station.
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to retrieve information from computer programs, CD ROMs, etc.
  • Ability to ensure computer chips function properly.
  • Ability to ensure computer calibrations are adjusted properly.
  • Ability to make repairs to vehicle bodies and frames.
  • Ability to apply municipal requirements for Inspection and maintenance (IM) of vehicles.
  • Ability to learn and provide snow removal seasonally as called upon.
  • Ability to overhaul engines (types vary with duty station).
  • Ability to prioritize inspection steps.
  • Ability to select and properly operate diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to use precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to apply electronic analysis to equipment problem diagnoses.
  • Ability to manipulate tools in confined spaces.
  • Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383).
  • Register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety sensitive duties.
  • Provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
  • Successfully obtain a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of hire and signs an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
  • Comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures.
  • Provide own hand tools.
