About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is seeking a Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive, Advanced Journey/Lead to help maintain all heavy-duty and light duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports and other user agency vehicles. The incumbent must be able to resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods, and perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment. This includes diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems (air and electrical) for light and heavy-duty equipment. As part of the State Equipment Fleet (SEF) team, this role directly impacts the department's mission of “Keeping Alaskans Moving through Service and Infrastructure” by ensuring essential vehicles and equipment remain operational.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.

  • Skill in the use of standard shop tools and procedures.
  • Ability to retrieve, read and apply O.S.H.A. guidelines.
  • Ability to retrieve, read and apply information from technical manuals, computers and microfiche.
  • Ability to select and use proper tools.
  • Ability to maintain and repair shop tools and equipment.
  • Ability to use lubrication equipment.
  • Ability to recognize wear points.
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions in English.
  • Ability to perform work accurately, safely, thoroughly, and efficiently.
  • Ability to use a digital volt ohm meter.
  • Must have a willingness to attend and pass factory authorized schools on specific vehicle, equipment, or aircraft and apply acquired training to specific problems.
  • Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383).
  • Register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety sensitive duties.
  • Provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
  • Obtain a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of hire.
  • Comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures.
  • Pass the required pre-employment drug test.
  • Provide own hand tools.

Responsibilities

  • Professionally maintain all heavy-duty and light duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports and other user agency vehicles.
  • Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods.
  • Perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Diagnose, maintain, repair and modify transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems including air and electrical for light and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Travel in small planes to maintain equipment in remote locations, which may consist of day trips and overnight stays.
