About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive, Advanced Journey/Lead to help us Keep Alaska Moving! This role involves professionally maintaining all heavy-duty and light duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports, and other user agency vehicles. The incumbent must be able to resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods. The incumbent performs routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment. Must be able to diagnose, maintain, repair and modify transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, along with fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems including air and electrical for light and heavy-duty equipment. As part of the State Equipment Fleet (SEF) team, you will have a direct impact on the department mission of “Keeping Alaskans Moving through Service and Infrastructure.” SEF's mission is to provide all state agencies with safe, economical vehicles they need to accomplish their mission. Your work will aid in keeping essential vehicles and equipment on our roads and runways to keep Alaskans moving safely around our state.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
  • Ability to adapt to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles.
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems, including their design, uses, repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to set well-defined and realistic personal goals, display a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner, work with minimal supervision, be motivated to achieve, and demonstrate responsible behavior.
  • Must possess a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of hire.
  • Must provide own hand tools.
  • Must have steel toe boots and other approved protection equipment.
