About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive, Advanced Journey/Lead to help us Keep Alaska Moving! This role involves professionally maintaining all heavy-duty and light duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports, and other user agency vehicles. The incumbent must be able to resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods, performing routine and specialized repair and maintenance. This includes diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, as well as fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems (air and electrical) for light and heavy-duty equipment. As part of the State Equipment Fleet (SEF) team, you will directly impact the department's mission of “Keeping Alaskans Moving through Service and Infrastructure” by providing state agencies with safe, economical vehicles. Requirements

Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.

Willingness to attend and pass factory authorized schools on specific vehicle, equipment, or aircraft and apply acquired training to specific problems.
Knowledge of drive trains, suspension systems, and emissions (for advanced journey workers).
Knowledge of techniques and procedures of light duty automotive equipment maintenance and repair using electronic diagnostic equipment (for advanced journey workers).
Knowledge of techniques and procedures of heavy equipment maintenance and repair using electronic diagnostic equipment (for advanced journey workers).
Knowledge of aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) practices while at an airport duty station (for advanced journey workers).
Knowledge of federal regulations regarding performance standards and specifications of ARFF equipment while at an airport duty station (for advanced journey workers).
Knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding commercial vehicles (for advanced journey workers).
Ability to retrieve information from computer programs, CD ROMs, etc. (for advanced journey workers).
Ability to ensure computer chips function properly (for advanced journey workers).
Ability to ensure computer calibrations are adjusted properly (for advanced journey workers).
Ability to make repairs to vehicle bodies and frames (for advanced journey workers).
Ability to apply municipal requirements for Inspection and maintenance (IM) of vehicles (for advanced journey workers).

Ability to overhaul engines (types vary with duty station) (for advanced journey workers).

Ability to use precision measuring instruments (for advanced journey workers).
Ability to apply electronic analysis to equipment problem diagnoses (for advanced journey workers).
Ability to manipulate tools in confined spaces (for advanced journey workers).
Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383).
Register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety sensitive duties.
Provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
Comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures.
Provide own hand tools.
