About The Position

Merit Asphalt is seeking skilled professionals for the 2025-2026 season. We are a growing company with a low turnover rate, prioritizing a strong workplace culture and career building. This unique position is for a self-starter who takes direction well, filling a year-round mechanic role across all shifts. The fleet includes medium and heavy-duty trucks, construction equipment, and small engines. This role also involves management duties, including promoting a safe working culture, working with management on policies, overseeing shop operations, preparing tax and registration filings, maintaining equipment listings for insurance, monitoring shop expenditures, recommending equipment purchases, implementing approved purchases, prioritizing repairs from post-trip inspections, troubleshooting and repairing equipment breakdowns on job sites, diagnosing driver/operator concerns, ordering parts, performing repairs, and verifying fixes. The role also includes performing routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs, maintaining a clean and organized work area, and keeping legible repair records. Work hours are based on company needs.

Requirements

  • Previous experience as a mechanic- 1 year minimum.
  • Welding Skills required
  • Knowledge of shop equipment and environment.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment on multiple projects.
  • A valid Wisconsin License (CDL preferred).
  • Full set of tools.
  • Excellent work ethic, attendance, and ability to work with others on projects.
  • Resourceful.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and diagnosis skills.
  • Some experience in electrical, drivability, and basic knowledge of scan tools.
  • Detail-oriented.

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications (ASE or manufacturer) are preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled mechanical work in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems on light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, light and heavy-duty trailers, construction equipment, and small engine equipment.
  • Promote a safe working culture for all employees; working with shop personnel to minimize risk and increase safety for employees, at all times.
  • Work with the President and other management to establish new policies and procedures to allow for system updates and efficient operations.
  • Oversee shop operations through the administrative direction of the President to ensure adherence to the company’s vehicle fleet/equipment maintenance program.
  • Prepare and file necessary tax filings, registrations, and titles filings as needed to meet required deadlines.
  • Maintain and update the Company Equipment listing to ensure accurate insurance coverage.
  • Monitor all shop expenditures, working closely with accounting to eliminate invoice errors.
  • Recommend shop equipment purchases and maintenance needs to the company president.
  • Implement and follow-up on all approved purchases over $5,000.00.
  • Read all post trip inspection write-ups and prioritize repairs.
  • Trouble shoot and repair equipment/trucks that break down on jobsites to restore production.
  • Diagnose driver/operator concerns, order parts, perform repairs, and verify concern is fixed.
  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area/shop.
  • Maintain legible records of all repairs.
  • Perform routine vehicle and equipment inspections.
  • Perform daily maintenance and trouble shooting.
  • Diagnose, repair, and order parts.
  • Troubleshoot and repair downed vehicles and equipment to restore to production.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance.
  • Perform light & medium repairs.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area/shop.
