About The Position

Are you an expert in marine diesel systems with a passion for troubleshooting and high-performance repair? Our valued client, Ignition Marine, is seeking a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic to handle the inspection, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and overhaul of marine diesel engines, propulsion systems, generators, and auxiliary equipment. In this hands-on role, you will work on a wide range of vessels—from pleasure yachts to commercial ships—ensuring optimal performance and strict compliance with marine industry standards. You will bring strong technical expertise and a commitment to safety, reliability, and world-class quality.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience as a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic, Marine Mechanic, or Diesel Technician, with strong hands-on experience servicing diesel engines and marine propulsion systems
  • Deep understanding of preventative maintenance programs, marine auxiliary systems, and proficiency with diagnostic software
  • Proven ability to read service bulletins, schematics, and wiring diagrams to resolve complex issues
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding work in marine facilities, shipyards, and confined engine rooms
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with multiple trades, vessel owners, captains, and project managers under pressure

  • Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Certification
  • Marine Engine Technician Certification
  • Specific manufacturer certifications (e.g., Cummins, Caterpillar, Volvo Penta, MAN, MTU)
  • Transport Canada marine systems knowledge
  • Safety certifications (Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, First Aid)

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and service marine diesel engines, transmissions, generators, and propulsion systems
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, fuel, cooling, exhaust, and electrical systems using manufacturer software and electronic diagnostic equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance, scheduled service work, and complete engine rebuilds
  • Remove, disassemble, inspect, and reinstall diesel engines, marine gearboxes, shafts, propeller systems, and steering mechanisms
  • Conduct engine inspections, alignments, performance testing, operational assessments, and post-repair sea trials
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics
  • Prepare detailed condition reports, repair recommendations, and maintain accurate service records and work orders
  • Ensure all repairs comply with Transport Canada regulations and manufacturer standards
  • Assist with vessel haul-outs, emergency repairs, and occasional after-hours service calls to support vessel operations and customer needs
