About The Position

The Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Mechanic and Installer (HACR) shall provide periodic maintenance on the various air conditioning units on the MATSS vessel, as well as diagnostics and field repairs when necessary. The mechanic must be located full-time on Oahu, Hawaii. The mechanic(s) shall provide installation and initial setup of new AC units on the MATSS vessel, as required due to end-of-life phase-out or emergency replacement of failed units. Follows blueprints of engineering specifications to install units. Performs troubleshooting to identify the cause of problems. Maintains and secures a spare parts inventory. Recommends purchasing maintenance equipment and supplies as required to improve processes and efficiencies. When HACR work is not required, the individual(s) shall perform deck work as directed, as well as preservation, cleaning, maintenance, fabrication, upgrade/expansion, and repair duties. Additional duties shall include traveling with the MATSS vessel out to sea on all missions, completing various tasks at-sea, including performing deck and rigging tasks, cooking, cleaning, conducting rounds, standing watch, participating in firefighting operations, and performing emergency repairs. Works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function.

Requirements

  • Seven (7) years of relevant work experience or graduated from a technical school with five (5) years of relevant work experience performing work similar in scope.
  • Relevant work experience should be similar in scope, including at-sea vessel operations (deck, rigging and line handling tasks, cooking, cleaning, conducting rounds, standing watch, participating in firefighting operations, and performing emergency repairs), in-port operations (rigging, crane operation, forklift operation, and man-lift operation), and maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, upgrades, fabrication, installation, operational and testing support of HM&E systems similar to those found on MATSS.
  • Education, training, or certification necessary to service and install air conditioning units up to 15 tons of refrigeration capacity in the state of Hawaii, including any necessary state licenses or CFC licenses to charge/recover R-410A refrigerant, such as EPA Section 608 Technician Certification.
  • Experience in performing periodic maintenance, diagnostic, repair, replacement, and new installation of air conditioning units up to 15 tons of refrigeration capacity.
  • Experience in servicing and installing a wide variety of manufacturers and system types, including split system cooling units with forced air ventilation, ductless mini split systems, and window or wall-mounted packaged systems.
  • Excellent English communication skills both verbally and written.
  • Sound working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office applications, e.g., Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the required pre-employment screenings.
  • Must be eligible to possess a final U.S. Government security clearance. (SECRET clearance is required)

Nice To Haves

  • Completed 2-year Mechanical Technical School desired.
  • Training and certifications in firefighting, ship damage control, rigging, crane operation, forklift operation, man-lift operation, first aid, automatic external defibrillators, and CPR are highly desired.
  • Graduated from a technical school with five (5) years of relevant work experience.
