About The Position

Oakland County is seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented Hearing and Vision Program Technician to provide hearing and vision screenings for preschool and school-age children throughout the community. In this role, you’ll work directly with students, schools, families, and healthcare partners to help identify potential hearing and vision concerns and ensure children receive the support and follow-up care they need. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who enjoys working independently, interacting with children, and making a positive impact on community health and wellness. The position works part-time within schools within the county during the time when schools are in session. Interviewing and selection will take place with the goal to have the Technicians start employment in training in August 2026.

Requirements

  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license
  • Be a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Educational Development Test with At least six (6) months of full-time work experience using audiometric or vision screening materials and instruments; OR At least one (1) course in hearing or vision technician training, audiology, or a closely related subject
  • Have successfully completed sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited college or university with At least twelve (12) semester credit hours in one or more of the following areas: Early Childhood Development, Elementary Education, Psychology, Sociology, or closely related area
  • Have had at least six (6) months of paid or volunteer experience working directly with pre-school or elementary school age children in one or more of the following settings: school, church, daycare/school age care, extracurricular clubs, or sports.
  • Must submit to immunizations as required by the Health Division and to periodic tuberculin skin tests or chest x-rays at County expense.
  • Must pass the criminal background check prior to employment.
  • Ability to communicate to accurately convey information.
  • Ability to transport and operate typical hearing/vision equipment and supplies.

  • Some knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and techniques of hearing threshold and/or vision screening.
  • Possess a certificate of completion of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Comprehensive Hearing and/or Vision training course
  • Some ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with professional and paraprofessional public health employees, and with the general public.
  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with parents, teachers, school administrators, school support staff and children of varying age and levels of developmental ability.

  • Reasonable ability to utilize current word processing, e-mail and Internet software.
  • Applicants who don’t currently possess a certificate of completion of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Comprehensive Hearing and/or Vision training course must successfully complete the first available MDHHS comprehensive training course after hire and any additional MDHHS approved training that occurs prior to completing the comprehensive training course.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct hearing and vision screenings for preschool and school-age children using specialized equipment and MDHHS protocols
  • Interpret screening results and coordinate follow-up testing or referrals when needed
  • Prepare reports and maintain accurate screening records and documentation
  • Coordinate with schools and clinic sites to schedule screenings and organize testing logistics
  • Transport screening equipment and materials to schools and clinic locations throughout Oakland County
  • Communicate professionally with parents, teachers, school staff, and healthcare providers regarding results and referrals
  • Provide information about available community resources and services
  • Participate in ongoing education and training related to hearing and vision screening practices
  • Performs hearing and/or vision screening for preschool and school age children to detect abnormalities using specific screening equipment per the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services protocols.
  • Interprets vision and/or hearing test results, arranges for the retesting of clients who indicate a vision deficiency and/or hearing abnormality and completes the necessary reports detailing test results for parents and school personnel.
  • Identifies and follows up on selected children referred from either the hearing and/or vision program to assure medical attention is received for any detected abnormalities.
  • Coordinates with school personnel to arrange and confirm testing space and duties.
  • Transports all necessary testing material and equipment to worksite.
  • Completes and prepares daily reports detailing hearing and vision screening results for each client and codes test result information for input on data processing system.
  • Schedules appointments for hearing and vision screening, maintains files and records.
  • Provides referral information for services to public and community partners.
  • May assist physicians at clinics with medical dictation or assisting with exams.
  • Participates in continual education and training sessions.
  • Utilizes current countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
