About The Position

The RN II provides nursing care using the nursing process, directing team members and collaborating with multidisciplinary staff to provide appropriate care within a secure correctional setting. The RN Lead provides nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Directs and leads other assigned team members, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to provide age/developmentally appropriate care. Provides patient-centered care addressing physical, emotional, cultural, religious, and environmental needs. Provides leadership and oversight of patient care operations, managing nursing standards, staffing, and daily clinical and clerical workflows to support efficient, high‑quality care. Conducts assessments, develops nursing diagnoses, identifies outcomes, plans and implements interventions, provides health teaching, and evaluates care. Ensures a therapeutic environment and participates in professional governance and development. Correctional‑specific responsibilities include: Delivering nursing care to inmates/detainees while following correctional facility safety and security protocols. Responding promptly to emergencies anywhere within the secure perimeter (medical emergencies, injuries, suicide attempts, etc.). Managing care in intake/booking, general population, segregation, and medical observation units. Coordinating with correctional officers for safe inmate movement and maintaining awareness of the security environment. Maintaining strict control and accountability of sharps, medications, and clinical tools. Ensuring proper boundaries, communication standards, and compliance with PREA expectations. Documenting care in accordance with correctional medical record requirements and chain‑of‑custody considerations when applicable.

Requirements

  • Minimum one year of RN experience required.
  • Associate's Degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing, and a minimum of two years of work experience as a registered nurse required.
  • Licensure as an RN by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.
  • Current AHA BLS or Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers required.
  • Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Nursing preferred.
  • RN staff hired after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree must be enrolled in a BSN program within two years and complete it within four years.
  • Certification in specialty area within one year of eligibility strongly encouraged.
