About The Position

This role provides daily operational and administrative support for the unit and outpatient services, functioning as a resource for clinical personnel regarding unit and outpatient operational issues. The Health Unit Coordinator anticipates department needs and provides coordination of information systems, environmental, admitting, and clerical functions for patient areas within a medical center dedicated to the care of infants, children, and adolescents. The position involves operating and maintaining unit information systems, ensuring medical record integrity, managing forms, responding to communications, and maintaining accuracy of patient data. It also includes managing admissions, discharges, transfers, and short-stay documentation, demonstrating fiscal responsibility for patient charges and supplies, and ensuring a safe, organized, and efficient unit environment. The role requires monitoring patient locations, visitor flow, and assisting with visitor policy compliance. Additionally, it involves reporting and following up on maintenance and environmental service needs, collaborating with various departments for efficient patient flow, identifying and resolving system problems, and responding to communication system/patient alarms with urgency. The Health Unit Coordinator also reviews and revises staffing information and interacts with parents/guardians to obtain non-clinical information, ensuring the timeliness, accuracy, availability, and security of information in compliance with HIPAA and other regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains unit information systems, including medical record integrity, forms management, and timely response to communications.
  • Ensures accuracy of patient data and timely completion of admissions, discharges, transfers, and short-stay documentation.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility for patient charges and rental equipment, and ensures the unit maintains adequate clerical supplies.
  • Ensures unit organization and a safe, accessible, effective, and efficient environment for patients, families, visitors, and employees.
  • Monitors patient location and traffic flow at the front desk and on the unit, and assists with compliance of visitor policies.
  • Reports maintenance and environmental service needs to appropriate divisions and follows up to ensure completion.
  • Collaborates with clinical, admitting, information systems, and environmental services staff to coordinate efficient patient flow.
  • Identifies system problems and utilizes strategies for resolutions.
  • Responds to communication system/patient alarms and executes with a sense of urgency.
  • Reviews and revises staffing information.
  • Demonstrates extraordinary customer service and satisfaction in all interactions.
  • Interacts with parents/guardians to obtain non-clinical information as requested.
  • Ensures and reviews timeliness, accuracy, availability, and security of information (e.g., HIPAA, Informed Consent, Advanced Directive) as defined by CCHMC's mission, applicable laws, and regulations.
  • Fosters application of HIPAA standards to clinical practice.
