About The Position

Banner Health is seeking a Health Unit Coordinator for their Outpatient Observation Unit at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center. This position is responsible for a variety of administrative support functions and customer service for an assigned patient care area, promoting an organized and efficient delivery of care. The role facilitates communication between physicians and nurses, calls in consults, and acts as a liaison with internal departments and external contacts. This is a full-time evening shift position with 8-hour shifts from 2pm-10:30pm, including weekends and holidays on a rotating basis. The facility is a Level 1 Trauma Center and a leading nonprofit healthcare system.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • 1 year of medical clerical experience; preferably in a hospital or physician office setting, or prior experience in customer service.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Effective human relations and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of commonly used office software.
  • Keyboarding skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of an approved unit secretary program.
  • BLS certification.
  • Additional related education and/or experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performs receptionist/clerical duties to support overall operating efficiency and effective flow of communication and information throughout the department.
  • Processes patient admissions, records bed assignments in system, makes face sheets and prints patient labels upon admission.
  • Orders outside records from other facilities and Physician’s offices.
  • Maintains a complete patient record with admission, transfer, and discharge information, progress notes, and consent forms.
  • Ensures that all reports and chart forms are scanned or filed into the patient’s record.
  • Ensures that charting forms are labeled and accessible if they are needed.
  • Maintains adequate supplies of frequently used, patient education materials.
  • May be responsible for QC/validations.
  • Enters pending discharges into the system.
  • Coordinates patient appointments for procedures and treatments that may be required prior to timely discharge.
  • Processes patient discharges.
  • Maintains adequate levels of office, dietary, and medical supplies and completes requisition forms when supplies need to be ordered.
  • Reconciles supply order upon delivery.
  • Monitors and tracks the use and whereabouts of electronic equipment such as patient ID scanners and lap top computers.
  • Ensures that all are accounted for and in working order.
  • Works under local supervision and has responsibility for assigned unit only.
  • Interacts with other health unit secretaries and other staff at all levels throughout the facility.
  • Interacts with patients, families, physicians, unit staff, case managers, patient service staff, medical records staff, and a wide variety of external customers.
