About The Position

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) for the Emergency Department plays a crucial role in patient management, record keeping, communication, and clerical tasks. This part-time position involves admitting, transferring, and discharging patients, ensuring accurate documentation, and serving as a liaison between patients, medical staff, and other departments. The HUC will also be responsible for maintaining electronic health records, coordinating appointments and procedures, ordering supplies, and assisting patients and families. Additional duties may include preparing birth/death certificates and vital sign graphs.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate (HSD, GED, HSED)
  • At least one year of experience in a healthcare setting
  • Problem-Solving: Making fast, accurate decisions under pressure.
  • Prioritization: Managing multiple patients and tasks simultaneously.
  • Adaptability: Responding effectively to constantly changing situations.
  • Clear Communication: Conveying information quickly and accurately to patients, families, and the healthcare team.

  • Efficient Documentation: Accurately recording patient information and treatment.

  • Interdisciplinary Coordination: Collaborating across departments for patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Admitting, transferring, and discharging patients; ensuring accurate documentation and communication throughout the processes.
  • Maintaining and updating patient medical records, including electronic health records (EPIC), and compiling charts.
  • Serving as a liaison between patients, medical staff, and other departments; answering phone calls; relaying information.
  • Coordinating appointments, procedures and surgeries for patients.
  • Performing various typing, filing and data entry projects.
  • Ordering and organizing supplies for the unit.
  • Helping patients and families by answering questions, giving directions, providing forms and brochures.
  • May be asked to prepare birth/death certificates, vital sign graphs, or other various unit projects.
