About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This position offers evening shifts with a scheduled weekly hours of 40. The compensation range is $17.99 - $23.68. This is a Union Position (AFSCME) and benefits are eligible for full-time employees. The shift length is 8 hours, with a start time of 3:00 pm or as assigned, including weekend rotation. Overtime is defined as 12+ hours in a day or 40+ hours in a work week.

Requirements

  • Must have at least 6 months of healthcare business experience in any of the following areas: Physician practice, unit clerk, hospital or clinic, or 6 months of direct patient care experience.
  • Must have computer experience.
  • Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant Program or applicable on the job clinical experience.
  • If Medical Assistant Program has not been completed, must have applicable on the job clinical experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within 30 days of hire.
  • If travel to offsite locations is required, must possess a valid driver’s license and have a driving record without a significant history of accidents and/or convictions of moving violations.

Nice To Haves

  • Medical terminology course or training preferred.
  • Experience working as a Health Unit Coordinator preferred.
  • Experience working as a Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Nationally certified or registered as a Medical Assistant preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Functions under the supervision of physicians or nurses to provide coordination of admissions, transfers and discharges for patients.
  • Responsible and accountable for complete and accurate processing of information, communicating and collaborating with healthcare team members to facilitate patient care.
  • Facilitates the acquisition of materials and assists with clerical activities to support the unit’s operations.
  • Acquires information and processes patient related orders and performs other clerical duties to facilitate effective unit operations.
  • Communicates information effectively to team members providing patient care to optimize the team's function and enhance productivity.
  • Coordinates processes associated with admissions, transfers and discharges to ensure proper and effective completion of the patient's care.
  • Collects and distributes medical records as necessary to ensure the proper dissemination of patient care information.
  • Orders and maintains appropriate supply inventory for the unit to provide the unit with adequate levels of materials to be utilized at any time.
  • Coordinates and schedules appointments or procedures to ensure the patient care needs are completed in a timely manner.
  • Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.
  • Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Functions as an important member of the healthcare team by providing basic clinical, clerical, and technical support to assist providers in planning for patients’ care, comfort, and safety.
  • Prepares instruments, equipment and materials needed for patient care; keeps exam room aseptic, neat and supplied.
  • Obtains and documents complete patient data in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Prepares patients for exams and assists provider with exams/tests/procedures as needed.
  • Instructs patients in preparation for specific procedures and tests when appropriate.
  • Performs basic procedures as ordered by provider and within scope of practice.
  • Processes provider's orders, prepares appropriate forms, and schedules appointments and services.
  • Arranges for hospital admission when indicated.
  • Ensures that charges are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Assists the provider with obtaining test results.
  • Proficiently uses computer applications as required for patient care.
  • Processes prescriptions as directed.
  • Communicates with patients regarding their concerns, collects information, and relays this information professionally and efficiently to the provider.
  • Completes clerical or insurance processes to ensure the proper documentation and submission of charges is completed in a timely manner.
