The Health Teacher provides engaging, standards-based health education to students ages 13–21 who are enrolled in a secure juvenile detention educational program. The teacher promotes lifelong health literacy while addressing the unique social, emotional, behavioral, and developmental needs of justice-involved youth through trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and restorative instructional practices. The Health Teacher creates a safe, respectful learning environment where students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions regarding physical health, mental health, nutrition, substance use prevention, healthy relationships, personal safety, sexual health, emotional regulation, and overall wellness. The teacher collaborates closely with school clinicians, correctional staff, special education personnel, and community partners to support students' academic success and successful community reintegration. The role requires flexibility and adaptability in planning and delivering instructional strategies to meet scholars' needs.
